"MY HOME IS MY CASTLE" OR SOMETHING ABOUT ETHICAL DIMENSION OF ARCHITECTURE

Ada Kwiatkowska

Abstract

Architecture, in the meaning of creative process, is an expression of defined ethical attitude of an architect; attitude, which reveals through making the choices in the process of creation. Architecture, in the meaning of autonomous, real object, introduces ethical discussion between object and context to the reality. The fundamental ethical problems, relating to architecture and expressing the dependence of quality of architectural object on practical ethics of architect (ethical code of architect, seven deadly sins) and of spatial order in architecture on different systems of values (ethics of modernism and postmodernism) were defined. Valuation criteria of architecture, not connected with author's intention and system of values hidden behind the spatial order of an object, were described. Proposed criteria make possible to value the inner good and bad of architectural object as itself (ethics as the banks of the river of pluralism).
