Ada Kwiatkowska

Abstract

The new concepts of shaping the housing environment (new urbanism) came into existence on the basis of social (communitarism) and ecological movements in the last decade of the 20 th Century. The fundamental patterns of shaping the habitat in traditional meaning and according to the principles of "new urbanism" were defined. Traditional patterns of housing environment were analyzed in the following aspects: division, zoning, composition, orientation, mutual relation between open and closed space, directions of the habitat's expansion. The new patterns of shaping the housing environment according to the principles of "new urbanism" were defined on the basis the ideas of concentration, sharing the common space, complexity, energy-efficiency, symbiosis of the open and closed space, qualitative growth. The principles of shaping the ecological habitat in the aspects of energy-efficient architecture were described.
